Planning and Development Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
International Development formerly known as Foreign Aid is a section of Planning and Development Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KP), which ensures allocation of financial assistance from international governmental organizations (IGO’s), Non-governmental organizations (INGO’s) and different development partners to different public sectors of KP. Aim of foreign assistance/ investment in different sectors is to ensure peace, security and development. Objectives include promoting economic growth, reducing poverty, improving governance, expanding access to health care and education, promoting stability in conflict regions especially the Newly Merged Tribal districts (NMD’S), countering terrorism, promoting human rights, strengthening allies, and curbing illicit drug production and trafficking. Foreign aid/ assiatance is a key source of income in Pakistan like many other developing countries. This inflow fill saving and investment gaps and increases productivity by transmitting modern technology and know-how that promotes growth.
Foreign assistance prominently began to Pakistan in 1970’s from US and European countries under different agreements followed by assistance during Afghan war of 1979-1989 to rehabilitate afghan refugees and after that to help support Pakistan recover from the devastations of War on terror in 2001 and post crisis of internal militancy and destruction in 2006 and onwards.
Different organizations and countries grant loans and assistance in multiple sectors and International Development section overlooks and manages all projects. It also takes into consideration demanded projects needed by different governmental sectors. It also attracts foreign investors to multiple sectors within KP for rehabilitation and development. It relies on loan/assistance from variety of sources including indi ,vidual donors, foundations, corporations and governments.
